Good afternoon Visual Arts parents, students and supporters! Read on for a few reminders and updates.

CONGRATULATIONS

Did you know that BTW's Mock Trial team has won regionals in 2022, 2023 and 2024? Congratulations to team members Eryn Anum (Theatre 2025), Audrey Buehler (Theatre 2025), Molly Chakery (Theatre 2024), Miranda Churchill (Theatre 2025), Isabel Gameros (Theatre 2024), Olivia Lang (Theatre 2025), Maxine Louthan (Theatre 2025), Erin Mansour (Theatre 2025), Ellie Oddo (Visual 2026), and Abigail Smith (Theatre 2027). Courtroom artist Lola Saldana (Visual 2025) also placed first in DISD and will be competing in the state tournament in March.

FEBRUARY MEETINGS

The PTSA meets on Tuesday, February 13 at 6 p.m. in the Commons. The Visual Arts Guild will not have a February meeting. The next guild meeting will be Tuesday, March 5 following the PTSA meeting.

SENIOR SHOW #2

The next senior exhibit runs through February 26. The free opening reception is Thursday, February 15 from 5-7 p.m. in the Hudson Gallery. All are welcome to celebrate our second round of seniors - Sylvia Baughman, Eva Bechtol, Guerin Honeycutt, Lilly Kowalczyk, Angel Ramirez-Banda, Laurel Rutherford, Emily Sharpe, Emma Taylor and Raygraciona Tennell.

The last two senior shows are:

  • Senior Show #3: The exhibit runs March 1-28 and the opening reception is Thursday, March 7 from 5-7 p.m. 
  • Senior Show #4: The final senior show runs April 2-26 and the opening reception is Thursday, April 18 from 5-7 p.m.
STUDENT OPPORTUNITIES

Check the Visual Arts Guild website and the board outside the first floor art rooms for the latest contests and opportunities. Just added:

Arts Fort Worth invites all artists to submit artwork for its March exhibit. Artists of all ages can submit one work between February 22-24. See the Arts Fort Worth website for details.

Dallas Festival of the Arts is April 13-14, 2024, at Kidd Springs Park in Oak Cliff. This two-day outdoor festival will feature approximately 100 painters, photographers, sculptors, metalwork, glass artists, jewelers, and offer artist demonstrations, live acoustic music, festival foods and beverages. Artists can visit the Dallas Festival of the Arts website to apply as a vendor. Applications are due February 22.

Students can win a $250 gift card with a design or video entry for the North Texas Tollway that advocates driving safety. The deadline is March 7.

YOUNG AMERICAN TALENT - MARCH 1

The deadline to submit artwork for Young American Talent is March 1. See the guild website for details on YAT. DISD students can waive the application fee for up to three pieces with the code DISD2024.

SENIOR NEWS

The Visual Arts Senior Dinner will be Tuesday, May 21 in the Hudson Gallery (time TBD). We are looking for 6-8 underclassmen parents and guardians to help plan and host the dinner. Email btwvisualarts@gmail.com if you are interested.

The Senior Activities Committee is collecting design submissions for a Pegasus logo that will be featured on the Class of 2024 Baccalaureate program. Please submit your design using this Google form by March 31. (Seniors only please.)

The next Senior Surprise is Tuesday, February 13 during lunchtime in the senior cafeteria - beignets and beads to celebrate Mardi Gras.

DISD CELEBRATES BLACK HISTORY MONTH

Dallas ISD is celebrating the rich history, stories and achievements of African Americans throughout our nation, state, county and district during Black History Month. There are webinar Wednesdays, highlights of local leaders including BTW Principal Garry Williams, and guest readers. Visit the DISD website daily to see celebrations on this year’s theme, “African Americans and the Arts." 

CADD ART WALK

The Contemporary Art Dealers of Dallas will host its annual Art Walk on Saturday, March 2, 2024.

The free event begins at 10 a.m. and will be filled with an art hopping tour through each CADD Gallery. Participating CADD members include Conduit Gallery, Craighead Green Gallery, Cris Worley Fine Arts, Erin Cluley Gallery & Cluley Projects, Galleri Urbane, Holly Johnson Gallery, Keijsers Koning, Laura Rathe Fine Art, Meliksetian | Briggs, PDNB Gallery, Pencil on Paper Gallery, Ro2 Art, and Valley House Gallery and Sculpture Garden.
