Good morning Visual Arts parents, students and supporters! The newsletter is early this week so we can remind you about the opening reception of Senior Show #2 tonight from 5-7 p.m. in the Hudson Gallery. 

SENIOR SHOW #2

The next senior exhibit runs through February 26. The free opening reception is Thursday, February 15 from 5-7 p.m. in the Hudson Gallery. All are welcome to celebrate our second round of seniors - Sylvia Baughman, Eva Bechtol, Guerin Honeycutt, Lilly Kowalczyk, Angel Ramirez-Banda, Laurel Rutherford, Emily Sharpe, Emma Taylor and Raygraciona Tennell.

The last two senior shows are:

  • Senior Show #3: The exhibit runs March 1-28 and the opening reception is Thursday, March 7 from 5-7 p.m. 
  • Senior Show #4: The final senior show runs April 2-26 and the opening reception is Thursday, April 18 from 5-7 p.m.
AFRICAN AMERICAN HERITAGE FESTIVAL - FEBRUARY 22-23

The African American Heritage Festival is Thursday, February 22 and Friday, February 23. (There is a free student preview February 21.) Ticket info is coming soon.

You can purchase an ad in the program for as little as $15. Celebrate your student, recognize a faculty member or alum, or advertise your business. The deadline to purchase an ad is Friday, February 16.

The Class of 2026 hosts the African American Heritage Festival. Parents and students in the sophomore class are encouraged to volunteer and donate concessions to support the event and help raise funds for the Class of 2026 senior fund.

YOUNG AMERICAN TALENT - MARCH 1

The deadline to submit artwork for Young American Talent is March 1. See the guild website for details on YAT. DISD students can waive the application fee for up to three pieces with the code DISD2024.

SENIOR NEWS

The Visual Arts Senior Dinner will be Tuesday, May 21 in the Hudson Gallery (time TBD). We are looking for 6-8 underclassmen parents and guardians to help plan and host the dinner. Email btwvisualarts@gmail.com if you are interested.

The Senior Activities Committee is collecting design submissions for a Pegasus logo that will be featured on the Class of 2024 Baccalaureate program. Please submit your design using this Google form by March 31. (Seniors only please.)

LOOKING AHEAD

Check the guild website and social media for details but keep an eye out for information on these events for second semester:

  • Monday, February 19: No school 
  • Thursday, March 7: Senior Show reception
  • March 11-15: Spring break 
  • March 19: PTSA meeting at 6 p.m. and Visual Arts Guild meeting at 7 p.m. (This was rescheduled from March 5, due to Election Day.)
  • Saturday, April 13: I Am Booker T Day
  • Thursday, April 18: Senior Show reception
  • Thursday, May 9: Young American Talent reception
  • Tuesday, May 21: Senior Dinner

OK2BX FILM FESTIVAL

The OK2BX Film Festival represents the future of film, showcasing high school students’ talent, creativity and cinematic vision. The students’ films paint stories of diversity and inclusion through their eyes. Awards are given in the categories of animation, smartphone, LGBTQIA+, kindness, and inclusivity. The rising stars’ films will be showcased at an awards ceremony in the historic Texas Theatre in Dallas Texas, on April 14, 2024. The deadline to submit is February 21.
